Water scarcity worsens on Ilha Brava and the population calls for urgent answers
Cidade de Nova Sintra, November 7, 2025 (Bravanews) - Ilha Brava is facing a period of severe water scarcity, which is critically affecting the daily lives of most of its localities. The decrease in rainfall has led to a drastic reduction in the flow of springs, the island's only source of supply.
Residents report experiencing a "squeeze" in water distribution, with frequent cuts and rationing, compromising domestic and agricultural activities and even the tourism sector.
The situation has sparked outrage among the population, with demonstrations by Bravenses demanding concrete answers from the authorities, particularly regarding the operation of the desalination plant which, according to reports, is almost complete, but with no date for starting operations. The inactivity of the desalination plant, seen as the most lasting solution to the prolonged crisis, is adding to the frustration on the island.
In parallel, projects such as the "fog hunters" have tried to mitigate the problem by collecting a few liters of water a day, but these initiatives, although valuable, are insufficient to meet the island's needs.
The water crisis on Brava underlines Cape Verde's persistent challenges in the face of climate change and water resource management, requiring swift and effective implementation of promised structural solutions.
